Ann Arbor - Identifying the Challenges - Schutt & Company facilitated a session with the City of Ann Arbor Planning Commission at their annual retreat in the fall of '97. One of the goals of the retreat was to identify planning projects for the upcoming year for Planning Department staff. Providing disposal cameras and instructions weeks prior to the retreat, Planning Commissioners photographically documented "areas of town in need of change". Using the photographs and maps of the city at the retreat, Commissioners located each other's photographs on the maps and shared observations. The facilitated exercise provided not only the focus needed to assist in future project selection but also a view of the city never before seen. (October '97)

Woodward Avenue Heritage Route Marketing Strategy - Schutt &
Company as the prime contractor with CERB Associates and Marketworks, Inc developed a marketing strategy for Michigan's first designated urban Heritage Route. The challenge in developing a workable Marketing Strategy was twofold. The first was to be inclusive of all
stakeholders and make sure that the effort defined specific roles and responsibilities. The second was to make sure that it was comprehensive. There was concern that due to the size and urban complexities of the corridor that it may not be "market ready". Simple branding and promotion would not result in success unless the product was enhanced. The challenge was to prepare an approach that had proven successful in other places and builds internal capacity within stakeholders. The Woodward Heritage Avenue Marketing Strategy is a unique approach to raising awareness of Byway visitors to a corridor's attributes.
It uses a proven strategy but one that is traditionally used in downtown revitalization ---not on transportation corridors. It is a strategy which includes branding the corridor, is inclusive of all corridor stakeholders, defines roles and responsibilities for each stakeholder and uses four key components: Organization, Design, Promotion, and Economic and Community Development.
